Have you ever wanted to sew you own corset? Now is your chance!
In this class, you will learn how to fit and sew a single layer underbust corset. You will gain confidence and skills, as you are guided step-by-step in the process each week by Catherine of Crystal Pegasus Costumes. By the end of term, you will have a custom fitted corset and a pattern adjusted to your measurements.
The corsets will be made from luxurious Spot Broche Coutil (a fabric designed for corsetry), and include a split busk at the centre front, back lacing, flat steel bones at the front and back, and spiral steel or synthetic whalebone bones at the sides (as per student preferences). Students will have a choice (at time of booking) for which colour fabric they wish to use (black, nude with gold dots, grey, black with red dots).
This class has a total of 20 hours of workshop time! It runs over an 8 week term at Maison Burlesque, with a two and a half hour class each week. Students may also be required to complete homework sewing each week, to ensure they are ready to progress onto the next activity in each class.
Students must be able to competently use a sewing machine – this is not a beginner sewing class. If you can comfortably sew a tote bag or a basic skirt in non-stretch fabric using your sewing machine, or have completed the Beginner Sewing for Burlesque class in Term 2, then you are ready for this!
WHAT TO BRING:
In week 2, when we do the fittings, students should wear or bring a well-fitting bra and close-fitting singlet, slip or similar. If pants or skirts are worn, please ensure that they do not dig in or have a bulky waistband.
For the other weeks, wear clothing you feel comfortable in.
Students are required to supply their own sewing machine (which should have been serviced within the last 12 months) and extra needles, as well as basic sewing kit including hand sewing needles, glass headed sewing pins, fabric scissors, paper scissors, measuring tape, ruler and fabric chalk.
All fabric, notions, pattern, and specialist tools will be provided and are included in the cost of this class.
Students will need to provide their underbust, waist and hip measurements prior to class, so an appropriately sized pattern can be selected. Instructions for how to do this will be provided.
All enrolments are for a 8 week course in our studio in Richmond. Casual drop-ins are not available for this class.
Class numbers will be capped at a maximum of 8 students.
